Thirty Eighth Street has looked high and low for some amazing inspirational upholstery makeovers and boy have we come up with a great list to get you motivated! Let's face it- reupholstering a sofa or a chair takes patience, talent and can sometimes cost a hefty price. What if I told you that you could give your piece of furniture a face lift without pulling your hair out or emptying your pocket book?

Did you know that you can use paint to cover an outdated used piece of upholstered furniture and make it look fresh and new again? Would you like to know the best part? If your darling two year old spills grape juice on your freshly painted chair, you can sanitize the stain and using your left over paint, and simply paint right over the spot. An inexpensive solution to fix those accidents over hiring a service to come out and treat them!

Can you tell that this upholstered chair has been painted? Either could we! Sadie + Stella did a fabulous job updating this modern and vintage chair. (Would you believe it only cost them $10!?)

We attempted our own painted upholstery projects here and here using Chalk Paint® decorative paint by Annie Sloan. We selected a bold custom emerald green color to add a pop of color to our space. And no, we've never received a green bum-bum. ;) After 2 1/2 year, it's still holding strong!

You can paint vinyl! Wouldn't this look amazing in a vintage style boy's room? Turn your grandfather's heirlooms into an amazing statement piece. We sure think Reloved Rubbish nailed it with their Union Jack Vinyl Chair.

The Mallory Chair: Painting Upholstery

I'm in spring cleaning mode in the month of October at our house. Cleaning up my hard drive just got checked off the list. I really hate taking the time to go through those computer related items. But, when your desktop icons start to overlap..... that's a sign, right? ;) While I was purging 42 children selfie pictures (I kept a few good ones for future black mail) and a bunch of old files, I came across this quick chair makeover that I had forgotten to share.

I have gotten lots of nice upholstery compliments over the years. And then I have to take my queen hat off and let them know that I don't have any upholstery skills what so ever.  And that my friends is why I paint upholstery. Paying someone to re-upholster can be really expensive. Painting a chair gives you the opportunity to up-cycle a piece on a budget. If you find a chair that has great bones but the fabric is lacking- paint it. It will save you a lot of money and it wears really nicely.

There are quite a few products out there that you can use to paint fabric. I like using Chalk Paint® decorative paint by Annie Sloan. The trick to painting upholstery when using her products is to thin out your paint a little bit. Not too much, but just a little. By thinning it out, the paint will spread easier over the surface rather then just sit on top of it. You can choose to wax it afterwards or not. This chair was not waxed and it holds up just fine.

If you're wondering should I or shouldn't I- you really should. It's easy. You can do it. And if you are hating the way your chair is looking currently, you only have to go up from there!

The Riley Chairs

My heart skipped a beat when I found this chair on Craigslist. Then, I found out that there wasn’t just one, but two of them! They were interesting, they looked comfy and the people that were selling them were practically giving them away. But, the color of the wood and the fabric choice were not my style.

 

I knew recovering them would be a little pricey, but I didn’t care. Before I picked these up, they were already transformed them in my head. :)

I chose this fabric from Fabric.com and painted the chairs in Chalk Paint® decorative paint by Annie Sloan in Old White.

Isn’t it amazing what a little paint and print can do?
